Groove Club Volume 1:la confiserie magique Double LP

Groove Club Volume 1:la confiserie magique Double LP:
is now available from my ebay store or from the blog store. Another classic release from the French Lion Productions Label.

"A terrific compilation of succulent French psych/pop treats, collected and annotated by French author, journalist and flaneur Jean-Emmanuel Deluxe (Martyrs of Pop), and carefully sequenced for maximum enjoyment by the Lion! Together, we have imagined those magic years 1966-71 in France to be just as you find them here — overflowing with truly decadent pop-sike, as beautiful as the cathedral of Evry; this can be the arch-hippie Lolita, singing songs to make one dream of Anicée Alvina riding her bicycle in a red dress... or it can be something "other": sunny and stunning, or brooding and tinged with sadness. "Fabrice, 17 years old, is a minet, or to say it better, a mod from one of the posh neighbourhoods, the 16th district in Paris and such "golden ghettoes" as Auteuil, Neuilly and Passy. Fab’ likes to have his "ronron at the Dugstore", as Dutronc sang it (an untranslatable wordplay on ronron, "cat food", and a minet - "a kitten" - purring). Fabrice attends Henri IV prestigious high-school; his father, a businessman who made a fortune selling plastic flowers, and his mother, a former model from Jacques Fath, are never home – a cosy home indeed! With his Weston shoes, a slim-fitting suit by Renoma and his haircut modelled on those of Anglo-Saxons musicians appearing on French Eps, Fabrice dreams of Carnaby Street and the Sunset Strip. He is not alone: there’s his sister Stéphanie, 16, who wears a fringe, a mock Courrèges dress, a pink Shetland pullover and white boots. Stéphanie reads Salut Les Copains and Mademoiselle Age Tendre, which both fuel her passion for Françoise Hardy, Zouzou, Twiggy and the Beatles." The Groove Club is happy to present twenty-two records that we dug out as a tribute to Fabrice’s kinky faves. And we sense that, paradoxical as it may seem, although we have imagined a parallel cosmos to the Grande Heures of pop culture, we are not far from the truth." Lion Productions

Caesar and the Romans 45

Within a recent rummage through a load of 45s I received from the States I found this little Garage beauty on Scepter Records by Caesar and the Romans.

Caeser & His Romans were from Buffalo, recording two 45s on the GJM label in late '67 and 1968 before signing to Scepter for two more singles.

Caesar & His Romans became Caesar & THE Romans, which then evolved into Friendship Train which was a successful club & lounge act. During one set each night as part of the act they became Big Wheelie & The Hubcaps. This became so successful that Friendship Train was dropped in favor of a full night of Big Wheelie. Their final album was released on Amherst Records in 1976. Chuck stlll performs as Big Wheelie about 10-12 times per year. He was brilliantly managed by the late Fred Caserta who went on to found Kingdom Bound which is one of the largest concert events in the Christian Music field.

Nova Jazz Band (Captain Micky)African 45 Mzuri Records

Nova Jazz Band (Captain Micky) Mzuri Records (HL 7-46)

A 45 bought on Ebay with a fanstasic tropical sound. I would say that this is possibly highlife but it has a Rhumba quality to it. I have a load of African 45s and 78s that I will be posting up as well as including them in upcoming podcasts.

The Assanand & Sons music store in Mombasa, which started out releasing 78rpm discs back in the 1950s. Other than that I don't know much more about the record label and band so if you know more please feel free to leave a comment.

John Fahey Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You 5x CD/Book PREORDER

Not long till the release of the seminal box set! At Recordette Records we have been following the progress of this release with eager anticipation.

More than 10 years in the making, this box set features the earliest recordings and the first book ever written about one of the most influential guitarists from the 1960s and ‘70s, John Fahey. The five CDs feature 115 tracks, most of which are available on CD for the first time. The audio was remastered from Joe Bussard’s reel-to-reel tapes to achieve pristine sound quality. As for the accompanying book, the list of scholars who contributed essays includes Eddie Dean, Claudio Guerrierri, Glenn Jones, Malcolm Kirton, Mike Stewart and John’s childhood friend R. Anthony Lee. Byron Coley contributed a poem about John, and Douglas Blazek’s 1967 interview with Fahey is published for the first time. Released 10 years after John Fahey’s death, this set puts one of the final puzzle pieces of Fahey’s career in place. Everyone can now hear where this guitar legend got his start – a smoky basement in Frederick, Maryland. Co-produced by Dean Blackwood of Revenant, Glenn Jones, and Lance Ledbetter of Dust-to-Digital, this set is released with the support of Joe Bussard and the John Fahey Estate. The set is dedicated to John’s mother, Jane C. Hayes and the late musician Jack Rose.

Tango and Polka in the West Country?

After a recent move to the west country it wasn't long before I had found the local junk shop "Treasure Island" and was trawling their boxes of records. After passing the usual Doris Day and Ambrose and his Orchestra I found a few Polish titles, here are my highlights of the find.

Eryana Choir were a Polish male group vocal founded in 1930 by John Ernst (pseudonym Eryan , composer , pianist , arranger).
The choir was made up of singers: Adam Lach , Slawomir Neczypór , Boleslaw Satanic , and Mieczyslaw Ziołowski . Their first performance took place on 5 February 1931 , in the Lviv Theater. A year later they made the first recordings, and then actively played concerts (about 1000 performances). They also participated in many broadcasts for radio (about 250) .

Peter Lescenco (Pyotr Leshchenko) performed for European nobles and "White" (anti-Bolshevik) Russian émigrés at his own "Leschenko" cabaret in Bucharest (dubbed the "Eastern Maxim's"). The first part of every performance would typically be dedicated to gypsy music, but during the second part Leshchenko would dress up in a tuxedo, with a white silk handkerchief and sing and dance Argentine tango.

Peter Lescenco (Pyotr Leshchenko)

In the Soviet Union his work was banned both because he was believed to be a White émigré (which he was not legally) and because the style (tango and foxtrot) was deemed counter-revolutionary. Nevertheless, secretly he was very popular: people would even listen to Radio Tehran to hear his music, '78 records were smuggled into the country from the Baltics, and specialists would bootleg his music onto "ribs" (used X-ray plates).

Adam Nowicki i Jego Warszawiaki "Polka Na Niedziele (Sunday Polka)"

Adam Nowicki is a Polka pioneer, his mentor was the great Bernard Witkowski with who he played in the 30s.
In 1937 he formed his first trio. In 1940, his musical career was put on hold, as he was drafted into the Army, where he was a noted musician.
In 1948, his group made a promotional record and was signed by Columbia and through their vast distribution the bands popularity and workload increased. Also in 1948 he married Anne Kuliczowski and had two lovely daughters, who are also very fine musicians in their own right. After four years with the Columbia Label the Adam Nowicki Orchestra continued to record for Epic, Rave, Musico, Request, Piknic and other labels.

Wilcox-Gay Recordette

Opened up in all her glory with obligitory Black Recordette Cat instead of the HMV dog.

Packet of Philco Safety Records

Duotone Steel Cutting Needles

After looking around for an entry level record lathe I found out about the Wilcox-Gay Recordette. This is a home recorder that was sold in the late 30s in the USA and was generally used to record messages recorded by the built in microphone or record from the inbuilt radio.

My plan is to use it to produce small editions of one of short songs by various artists. More information on this to come. First I need to make sure that the Recordette works.

In the meantime here are a couple of you tube videos I found that show how the recording process works:
