Shot live for TV by the legendary German music show “Rockpalast” this DVD represents the earliest example of a complete Fahey concert performance. The multi-camera filming features detailed close-ups of Fahey’s playing style giving Fahey fans a rare insight into what Pete Townsend has called the William Burroughs of the guitar. Fahey’s 1978 visit to Europe saw him in fine wild form performing an 11 track set and as an incredibly rare bonus a short interview with the maverick iconoclast.

Dust to Digitals Opika Pende: Africa at 78 RPM (4CD+Book) now available for Pre Order

Dust to Digital keep the heavy weight box sets coming with this 4-CD collection featuring 100 tracks taken from rare 78rpm recordings of African music (1909 to mid-1960s), none of which have ever been issued on CD until now.

Pan-African in scope & wildly diverse, Opika Pende is a testament to the deep riches found in early recorded music across the continent. compiler bio: Jonathan Ward is a Los Angeles-based collector, researcher, & writer. In 2007, he began the well-known website Excavated shellac, which features a wide-range of scarce, international 78rpm records from across the globe with extensive commentary.

In 2010, Jonathan released his first LP in a series for Dust-to-Digital’s vinyl imprint Parlortone. Titled Excavated Shellac: Strings (available from the recordette shop), it contains 14 exemplary performances on string instruments from across the globe, all from his collection of 78s.

A 45 bought on Ebay with a fanstasic tropical sound. I would say that this is possibly highlife but it has a Rhumba quality to it. I have a load of African 45s and 78s that I will be posting up as well as including them in upcoming podcasts.

The Assanand & Sons music store in Mombasa, which started out releasing 78rpm discs back in the 1950s. Other than that I don't know much more about the record label and band so if you know more please feel free to leave a comment.

John Fahey Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You 5x CD/Book PREORDER

Not long till the release of the seminal box set! At Recordette Records we have been following the progress of this release with eager anticipation.

More than 10 years in the making, this box set features the earliest recordings and the first book ever written about one of the most influential guitarists from the 1960s and ‘70s, John Fahey. The five CDs feature 115 tracks, most of which are available on CD for the first time. The audio was remastered from Joe Bussard’s reel-to-reel tapes to achieve pristine sound quality. As for the accompanying book, the list of scholars who contributed essays includes Eddie Dean, Claudio Guerrierri, Glenn Jones, Malcolm Kirton, Mike Stewart and John’s childhood friend R. Anthony Lee. Byron Coley contributed a poem about John, and Douglas Blazek’s 1967 interview with Fahey is published for the first time. Released 10 years after John Fahey’s death, this set puts one of the final puzzle pieces of Fahey’s career in place. Everyone can now hear where this guitar legend got his start – a smoky basement in Frederick, Maryland. Co-produced by Dean Blackwood of Revenant, Glenn Jones, and Lance Ledbetter of Dust-to-Digital, this set is released with the support of Joe Bussard and the John Fahey Estate. The set is dedicated to John’s mother, Jane C. Hayes and the late musician Jack Rose.

Tango and Polka in the West Country?

After a recent move to the west country it wasn't long before I had found the local junk shop "Treasure Island" and was trawling their boxes of records. After passing the usual Doris Day and Ambrose and his Orchestra I found a few Polish titles, here are my highlights of the find.

Choru Eryana "Capri" (Tango - teatru Wielka Rewja)

Eryana Choir were a Polish male group vocal founded in 1930 by John Ernst (pseudonym Eryan , composer , pianist , arranger).

The choir was made up of singers: Adam Lach , Slawomir Neczypór , Boleslaw Satanic , and Mieczyslaw Ziołowski . Their first performance took place on 5 February 1931 , in the Lviv Theater. A year later they made ​​the first recordings, and then actively played concerts (about 1000 performances). They also participated in many broadcasts for radio (about 250) .

Peter Lescenco (Pyotr Leshchenko) performed for European nobles and "White" (anti-Bolshevik) Russian émigrés at his own "Leschenko" cabaret in Bucharest (dubbed the "Eastern Maxim's"). The first part of every performance would typically be dedicated to gypsy music, but during the second part Leshchenko would dress up in a tuxedo, with a white silk handkerchief and sing and dance Argentine tango.

In the Soviet Union his work was banned both because he was believed to be a White émigré (which he was not legally) and because the style (tango and foxtrot) was deemed counter-revolutionary. Nevertheless, secretly he was very popular: people would even listen to Radio Tehran to hear his music, '78 records were smuggled into the country from the Baltics, and specialists would bootleg his music onto "ribs" (used X-ray plates).

Adam Nowicki is a Polka pioneer, his mentor was the great Bernard Witkowski with who he played in the 30s.

In 1937 he formed his first trio. In 1940, his musical career was put on hold, as he was drafted into the Army, where he was a noted musician.

In 1948, his group made a promotional record and was signed by Columbia and through their vast distribution the bands popularity and workload increased. Also in 1948 he married Anne Kuliczowski and had two lovely daughters, who are also very fine musicians in their own right. After four years with the Columbia Label the Adam Nowicki Orchestra continued to record for Epic, Rave, Musico, Request, Piknic and other labels.
